Singapore was known in antiquity as Temasek, meaning sea town, and appears in records as early as the fourteenth century as an important trading port at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Legend tells of a Sumatran prince who landed here, spotted a beast resembling a lion, and named the place Lion City, a byname still used today.
In 1819 the British statesman Stamford Raffles established a trading post here. Thanks to its deep natural harbour and free-port policy, Singapore rose swiftly into a hub of East-West shipping and commerce. Over the following century and more, Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian immigrants flocked in, laying the city's pluralistic foundation.
In 1965 Singapore became an independent nation. Despite scarce natural resources, this small state soared through ports, finance, manufacturing and tourism, and today ranks among the wealthiest, cleanest and greenest city-states in the world, acclaimed as a Garden City.
The Marina Bay area is Singapore's modern landmark: the sky pool and observation deck atop Marina Bay Sands overlook the whole city, the neighbouring Gardens by the Bay dazzle with the nightly Supertree light show, and the spraying Merlion statue is a national symbol.
Sentosa is an all-in-one resort island with a Universal Studios theme park, an aquarium, beaches and a cable car, ideal for families; Orchard Road is a shopping paradise, while Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam preserve the traditional lanes, temples and markets of the Chinese, Indian and Malay communities.
The Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and River Wonders are world-famous for their open-concept design and conservation ethos; the indoor waterfall and gardens inside Changi Airport extend the Garden City idea right up to the moment of departure.
Classic city day: Merlion Park, the Marina Bay Sands observation deck, the Supertrees and Cloud Forest at Gardens by the Bay, sunset at the Marina Barrage, then the nightly Sands light-and-water show.
Cultural quarters day: Chinatown and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Little India and Tekka Centre, the Sultan Mosque and Haji Lane in Kampong Glam, then dinner along the Clarke Quay waterfront.
Family leisure day: cable car to Sentosa, a Universal Studios theme park or the aquarium, Siloso Beach, then back to shop on Orchard Road; with more time, spend a day at the zoo or Night Safari.
Near the equator, Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate, hot and rainy year-round, with temperatures usually between 24 and 32 degrees Celsius and no distinct seasons, so it can be visited at any time.
Relatively speaking, February to April sees slightly less rain and drier weather, a good window for outdoor activities; brief afternoon thunderstorms come and go quickly, so carrying a raincoat is enough.
Singapore is famous for its strict rule of law: littering, spitting, eating or drinking on the metro and jaywalking can all draw hefty fines, so please obey local regulations and keep public spaces clean.
Indoor air-conditioning is generally strong, so bring a light jacket; the sun is intense, so mind sun protection and hydration. In a multi-faith society, dress modestly when visiting temples and mosques.
Public transport is well developed, with metro and buses covering the whole city; consider buying a transit card. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
