The Sydney Opera House stands at Bennelong Point on Sydney Harbour in Australia, ringed by water on three sides, and is one of the most recognisable buildings of the twentieth century as well as a cultural symbol of the nation.
In 1956 the Australian government launched an international design competition; among more than two hundred entries the scheme by Danish architect Jorn Utzon was chosen. Construction began in 1959, and after structural challenges and cost overruns the building was formally completed and opened in 1973.
Since then it has quickly become a world-famous centre for the performing arts, and in 2007 it was inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage list, drawing millions of visitors each year.
The most striking feature is its group of white shell-shaped roofs, covered with over a million tiles that gleam in the sunlight and look dramatic from the sea and from the opposite shore.
Inside there are several performance halls hosting opera, symphony, ballet and theatre throughout the year; the great pipe organ in the concert hall is among the finest mechanical organs in the world.
Beside the Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay complement one another to form a classic city skyline; lit up at night the building takes on a special charm.
You might begin with a guided tour of the Opera House to learn its architecture and the functions of each hall, then step onto the outer steps and platforms for harbour views.
Afterwards walk to Circular Quay and The Rocks, or take a ferry to Manly Beach; return in the evening to enjoy the sunset and night lights over the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.
If you have time, book an evening performance, or photograph the Opera House panorama from Mrs Macquarie's Chair on the opposite shore.
Sydney lies in the Southern Hemisphere, where October to March is summer with warm weather suited to the seaside and outdoor activities, making it a good time to visit.
There are performances and festivals all year round; check the weather and the programme in advance and book popular shows early.
Visiting the interior requires a ticket and a guided tour; please keep order and stay quiet, and note that it is windy around the building, so keep warm and watch your belongings.
Show times, tour sessions and ticket prices may change, so please refer to the latest official announcement.
