Angkor lies in Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia and was the capital of the Khmer Empire from the ninth to the fifteenth century. Angkor Wat was built under King Suryavarman II in the early twelfth century, originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and later gradually turning into a Buddhist temple.
At its height the Khmer Empire made Angkor one of the largest cities in the world of its day; successive kings built Angkor Thom, the Bayon, Ta Prohm and many other grand monuments here, sustained by an intricate hydraulic system.
After the fifteenth century the Khmer moved their capital toward Phnom Penh, and Angkor was slowly swallowed by jungle and forgotten for centuries. Recorded and introduced by French explorers in the nineteenth century, it became known to the world again; in 1992 the Angkor Archaeological Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
Angkor Wat is the heart of the complex: its five lotus towers are reflected in the moat before them, and the gallery reliefs stretch for hundreds of metres, depicting the Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana and celestial apsaras, hailed as a masterpiece of ancient architecture and carving.
The Bayon is famed for its fifty-four towers of the Khmer Smile facing in four directions; Ta Prohm is bound and wrapped by giant silk-cotton roots, showing nature wrestling with the ruins; Baphuon, Banteay Srei and Preah Khan each have their own character.
Watching the sunrise over the lotus pond in front of Angkor Wat, or the sunset from Phnom Bakheng or Pre Rup, is the most unforgettable experience for visitors; the whole Angkor Archaeological Park is vast, divided into small, grand and outer circuits.
One-day highlights (small circuit): sunrise at Angkor Wat at dawn, the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the Bayon and Baphuon, Ta Prohm, then sunset at Phnom Bakheng in the evening.
Two-day deep dive: day one the small circuit; day two the grand circuit (Preah Khan, Pre Rup, East Mebon and more) or the outer circuit (Banteay Srei, Beng Mealea), catching both sunrise and sunset.
Three days or more: add Banteay Srei, Beng Mealea and the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake, or combine with the Siem Reap night market and a traditional dance show, taking your time.
Angkor has a tropical monsoon climate; November to February is cool, dry and sunny, the best and peak season to visit.
March to May is hot, often above 35 degrees Celsius; June to October is the rainy season with afternoon thunderstorms, but the greenery is thick and the moat and lotus ponds are full, with relatively fewer visitors.
The Angkor Archaeological Park requires a ticket, offered in one-day, three-day and seven-day options; dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and respect the religious sites.
Climb the monuments only in permitted areas and do not touch the reliefs or Buddha images; the park is large and the sun strong, so mind sun protection and hydration and consider hiring a car or guide. Some structures are now restricted for conservation, so tickets and access are subject to the latest official announcement.
