Kiyomizu-dera stands on the slope of Mount Otowa in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto. Founded in 778 (late Nara period), tradition holds that the monk Enchin, guided by a dream oracle, followed the source of the Otowa stream, found a spring of clear water, and carved a thousand-armed Kannon from the sacred wood to enshrine in a hermitage — the origin of the temple.
Around 780 the general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro converted his residence into a Buddhist hall, and the temple gradually grew. It was repeatedly destroyed by fire, and most of the present buildings were rebuilt in 1633 under the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu; it is the head temple of the Kita-Hosso sect.
The name comes from the “clear water” of the Otowa Falls. In 1994 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”. The Kiyomizu Stage before the main hall, held up by over a hundred huge timbers and built without a single nail out over the steep slope, is a masterpiece of Japanese wooden architecture.
The Kiyomizu Stage and main hall: the suspended wooden stage overlooks the city and the seasonal forest, while the main hall enshrines an eleven-faced thousand-armed Kannon (a hidden image, revealed only on special occasions).
The Otowa Falls: three streams of spring water flow down the rock, said to grant success in study, love and longevity; visitors drink from a long-handled cup to make a wish (customarily choosing just one stream).
Jishu Shrine, the gates and the pagoda: Jishu Shrine, dedicated to matchmaking (with its love stones), the vermilion Nio Gate and the three-storey pagoda, along with the Sai-mon gate and Oku-no-in.
Seasonal beauty: spring blossom, summer greenery, autumn maples and winter snow each have their charm, and special night-time viewings are held in spring and autumn, when the lit stage and foliage are especially moving.
Half-day classic: from Kyoto Station take bus 206 to Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-michi → climb the old lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka (with shopping) → the Nio Gate and pagoda → the main hall and Kiyomizu Stage → make a wish at the Otowa Falls → Jishu Shrine → descend to continue at Yasaka Shrine and Gion.
Beat the crowds at dawn: arrive right at opening (around 6:00) — the morning light is good and it is quiet, so you can photograph at leisure before touring the rest of Higashiyama.
Special night viewing: during the spring blossom and autumn foliage seasons the temple opens at night, a blue beam of light shot into the sky, the stage and maples glowing — a superb time for photography.
Spring (late March–April) sees some thousand cherry trees in bloom around the stage, and autumn (late November) sets the maples of Mount Otowa ablaze, viewed from the stage — the two most beautiful times of year.
The special night viewings of spring and autumn are extremely popular and involve queuing; summer (June–August) is lush but hot, and winter occasionally offers a serene snow scene.
Being on a slope and very popular, it is crowded year-round; avoid the midday peak and come early in the morning or in the evening.
Admission to Kiyomizu-dera carries a fee (about 400 yen for adults; subject to the latest official announcement), with fixed opening and closing times; the special night viewing charges separately and runs for limited periods.
The main hall has undergone a “Great Heisei Restoration”, so some areas may be scaffolded — check the latest status before visiting. Shoes are usually removed inside the halls and photography is restricted in places, so follow the signs.
The Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka approaches are stepped stone lanes, narrow, crowded and slippery; wear non-slip shoes and mind your step. No smoking and no loud noise inside the temple — respect the etiquette of a place of worship.
