Petra is an ancient city in southern Jordan, about two thousand years old, and was the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. The Nabataeans controlled the spice and caravan trade from the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean, and with their wealth carved a city out of rose-coloured sandstone.
Because its buildings and the rock share a rose colour, the city is called the Rose City. Long lost to the outside world, it was rediscovered by Western travellers in the 19th century. In 1985 Petra was inscribed as a World Heritage Site, and in 2007 it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Passing through the deep, narrow Siq canyon, the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) suddenly appears at the end — a rock-carved facade tens of metres high, exquisite and magnificent, the icon of Petra.
Beyond the Treasury lie the vast Royal Tombs, a Roman-style theatre, a colonnaded street and temples; climbing to the Monastery (Ad-Deir) takes nearly a thousand steps and rewards you with sweeping views.
The High Place of Sacrifice and viewpoints overlook the whole ancient city; at night Petra by Night lights the Siq and the Treasury with a thousand candles for a mysteriously beautiful atmosphere.
Classic one day: the Siq canyon → the Treasury → the Royal Tombs and the colonnaded street → the Roman theatre.
In-depth two days: day one the main sights → day two climb to the Monastery and the High Place of Sacrifice → Petra by Night (subject to the schedule).
Combined route: Petra → the Wadi Rum desert (Valley of the Moon) → floating in the Dead Sea or Red Sea diving at Aqaba.
March to May and September to November have mild weather and are the best seasons to explore Petra; spring and autumn days are comfortable with moderate sunshine.
Summer (June to August) is hot and dry, so set off early and protect yourself from the sun while staying hydrated; winter (December to February) is cold at night with occasional rain, so check the weather and opening conditions before travelling.
The site is large with long walking distances, mostly over sand, gravel and steps, so wear comfortable non-slip shoes and bring plenty of water and sun protection; pace your climbs according to your ability.
Agree on prices first for rides and guide services inside the site, respect the ruins, and do not climb on or carve the rock faces. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
