In the Age of Discovery Lisbon was a vital port and trading centre, and the Belém district witnessed Portugal's ocean voyages and glory; after the great earthquake of 1755 the city was rebuilt.
Today Lisbon is famous for its seven hills, yellow trams, azulejo tile murals and Atlantic breezes, full of the easy-going romance of southern Europe.
The Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery are landmarks of the Age of Discovery, both World Heritage Sites; the Monument to the Discoveries stands on the bank of the Tagus.
Vintage yellow trams wind through the steep lanes, and the old Alfama quarter is full of everyday charm; the Santa Justa Lift and São Jorge Castle look over the whole city.
Commerce Square and Augusta Street are broad and imposing; nearby, the Pena Palace in Sintra and Cabo da Roca (the westernmost point of mainland Europe) are classic day trips.

Lisbonne est la capitale du Portugal, à l'embouchure du Tage au bord de l'Atlantique, fondée à l'époque romaine et l'une des plus vieilles villes d'Europe.
À l'ère des Grandes Découvertes, Lisbonne était un port et un centre commercial essentiels, et le quartier de Belém fut le témoin des voyages au long cours et de la gloire du Portugal ; après le grand séisme de 1755 la ville fut reconstruite.
Aujourd'hui Lisbonne est célèbre pour ses sept collines, ses tramways jaunes, ses fresques d'azulejos et la brise atlantique, pleine de la douceur romantique de l'Europe du Sud.
La tour de Belém et le monastère des Hiéronymites sont des emblèmes de l'ère des Découvertes, tous deux au patrimoine mondial ; le monument des Découvertes se dresse au bord du Tage.
