The pyramids are the tombs of ancient Egyptian pharaohs, standing on the desert of the west bank of the Nile, about 4,500 years old. The Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World largely surviving to this day, built from more than two million blocks of stone — a testament to the astonishing engineering and astronomy of ancient Egypt.
Beside them stands the enigmatic Great Sphinx, symbol of the pharaoh's authority and protection. The valley temples, cult sites and workers' villages around the pyramids tell of belief and daily life in the Old Kingdom. The annual flooding of the Nile nurtured a brilliant Egyptian civilisation and made the pyramids an imperishable monument of humankind.
The three great pyramids of Giza — Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure — rise in staggered grandeur; the top of Khafre's pyramid still keeps its smooth limestone casing, and framing it with the Sphinx is the classic shot.
The Great Sphinx is carved from a single block of rock, more than seventy metres long, the largest monolithic statue of ancient Egypt, facing east to greet the sunrise.
Some pyramids' burial chambers can be entered (with a separate ticket) to feel the narrow passages and stone rooms; the nearby Solar Boat Museum and sound-and-light show add interest, and a camel ride to view the whole plateau is a classic experience.
Classic route: the Giza plateau viewpoint → the Great Sphinx → the burial chamber of Khufu or Khafre → a camel ride to a high point in the desert for a panoramic sunset.
In-depth route: the Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara → the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid at Dahshur → the three great pyramids of Giza.
Civilisation combo: the pyramids → the Egyptian Museum or the Grand Egyptian Museum → old Cairo and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.
October to March is cool and dry, the most comfortable season to visit the pyramids, with warm days and cool nights.
Summer (May to September) is scorching, with extremely high ground temperatures in the desert, so go in the early morning or evening and protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated; services change during Ramadan, so check ahead.
The pyramid area is crowded; beware of over-eager touts and paid photo offers, agree on a price before accepting any service, and guard your belongings.
The burial chambers are small and stuffy — those who are claustrophobic or unwell should judge their limits; respect the monuments and do not climb or touch the carvings. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
