Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal, in the Kathmandu Valley at the southern foot of the Himalayas. The valley has long been a crossroads of trade and religion and was the capital of the kingdoms of the Malla dynasty, accumulating a deep Hindu and Buddhist culture.
The Kathmandu Valley holds numerous palaces, temples and stupas, seven of whose monument groups were inscribed as World Heritage in 1979. The 2015 earthquake damaged some of the buildings, which have since been gradually restored; the old town still radiates the distinctive air of the City of the Gods.
Kathmandu Durbar Square is a cluster of the old royal palace and temples with exquisite wood carvings and stone work; the temple where the living goddess Kumari resides is especially mysterious.
Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) sits high on a hill, the eyes of Buddha on its white stupa gazing over the whole city; Boudhanath is the valley's largest round stupa, steeped in Tibetan Buddhist atmosphere.
The Pashupatinath temple is a Hindu holy site where cremation rites are often performed on the banks of the Bagmati; the old towns of Patan and Bhaktapur are famed for their well-preserved Newar architecture and squares.
Valley highlights: Kathmandu Durbar Square → Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) → Boudhanath Stupa → the Pashupatinath temple.
Old-towns combo: Patan Durbar Square and museum → Bhaktapur's pottery square → back to the Thamel district of Kathmandu.
Outdoor extension: Kathmandu → sunrise over the Himalayas at Nagarkot → Chitwan National Park or Pokhara (a gateway to trekking).
October to March is the dry season, clear and translucent, the best time to sightsee and view the snow mountains from afar; autumn has deep blue skies and spring (February to March) brings rhododendrons.
The summer monsoon (June to September) is rainy, with low visibility and muddy roads in the hills; winter mornings are cold and foggy, so check the weather by season before travelling.
Dress modestly when visiting temples and stupas, circumambulate clockwise, and ask permission before photographing religious rites and cremation grounds, respecting local taboos.
Old-town streets are narrow and traffic dense — mind road safety; some sites require an old-town pass or ticket. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
