Yellowstone, mainly in the U.S. state of Wyoming, is the world's first national park, sitting atop a huge volcanic caldera with extremely active geothermal activity.
It takes its name from the yellowish rock of the Yellowstone River and its canyon, and has the world's most concentrated geysers and geothermal wonders, a model of nature conservation.
Yellowstone and the surrounding area are inscribed as a World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, a treasure house of wildlife and geology.
Old Faithful erupts on schedule to spectacular effect, and the Grand Prismatic Spring is a blaze of colour, a classic image of the geothermal landscape.
The waterfalls and painted rock of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone are magnificent; the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs step down in layers; Yellowstone Lake spreads wide and blue.
Bison, elk and grizzly bears roam freely in the park, making it a superb place to watch wildlife in North America.
Classic loop: the Old Faithful area, the Grand Prismatic Spring, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and its falls, then the Mammoth Hot Springs terraces.
Wildlife route: head to Lamar Valley or Hayden Valley at dawn or dusk to watch bison, elk and predators.
Combined: Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, and stay in the nearby towns.
From May to September the climate is mild and the roads are open, the best season to visit Yellowstone for sightseeing, hiking and wildlife watching.
In winter most roads close and only a few areas can be reached by snowcoach; spring and autumn are changeable and some facilities close seasonally. Check the weather and road conditions before you go.
Geothermal areas are extremely hot and the ground is fragile, so always stay on boardwalks and marked paths, and never touch the springs or feed or approach wildlife.
The park is vast with sparse fuel and services, so fill up and carry food and water ahead; some roads close seasonally. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
