Queenstown sits on the shore of Lake Wakatipu on New Zealand's South Island, ringed by mountains and picturesque; it is said to have been named because its beauty was thought worthy of a queen.
In the mid-nineteenth century gold was found nearby, and crowds of prospectors poured in, giving rise to the town; after the gold rush faded it gradually turned into a holiday and adventure resort.
Today Queenstown is hailed as the adventure capital of the world and is one of New Zealand's most celebrated tourist destinations.
The lakeside town is beautiful; you can ride the Skyline Gondola up the mountain for panoramic views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, where the luge and the viewing restaurant are much loved.
This is one of the birthplaces of bungee jumping; the Kawarau Bridge and the Nevis Bungy attract thrill-seekers, and skydiving, jet boating and paragliding are equally popular.
The surrounding mountains are great for hiking and cycling and become ski resorts in winter, while natural sights such as Glenorchy and Milford Sound are close at hand.
Start by strolling along the lakeside in the town centre and riding the gondola up for the view, then try bungee jumping, jet boating or skydiving.
