Mount Fuji, at 3,776 metres, is the highest peak in Japan, straddling Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. It is a stratovolcano still classed as active, its last major eruption being the Hoei eruption of 1707.
Since ancient times Fuji has stood at the heart of Japan's mountain worship. Regarded as the dwelling of deities, its foothills are dotted with Sengen shrines, and in the Edo period the Fuji-ko confraternities turned climbing the mountain into an act of purification and prayer.
In art, Fuji is the symbol of Japanese culture: Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido carried its image around the world. In 2013 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an “object of faith and source of artistic inspiration”, covering 25 component sites including the summit shrines, the Fuji Five Lakes and Shiraito Falls.
The summit and climbing: the official season runs from early July to early September, with four main trails — Yoshida, Fujinomiya, Subashiri and Gotemba. Watching the sunrise (Goraiko) from the top and walking the crater rim (Ohachi-meguri) are classic experiences.
Lake Kawaguchi: the most accessible and best-positioned of the Fuji Five Lakes, famed for the “inverted Fuji” reflected on its surface; the lakeside offers Oishi Park, the Kachi Kachi ropeway and the Music Box Forest.
Arakurayama Sengen Park: the vermilion five-storey Chureito pagoda framed with cherry blossoms and Fuji is Japan's most iconic postcard view. Oshino Hakkai are eight spring-fed ponds formed by Fuji's meltwater, listed among Japan's 100 famous waters.
One-day viewing (no climb): a highway bus from Shinjuku, Tokyo reaches Lake Kawaguchi in about 1h45 → Arakurayama Sengen Park for the pagoda-and-Fuji shot → Oishi Park and a lakeside stroll → Oshino Hakkai → return in the evening.
Two-day climb: on day one set off in the afternoon from the 5th station of the Yoshida trail and overnight in a hut at the 8th station → before dawn on day two continue to the summit for Goraiko → after the crater rim, descend the separate down-trail (very dusty; bring gaiters and a mask).
Seasonal themes: cherry blossom at Kawaguchi in spring, the climbing season and lakeside fireworks in summer, the autumn foliage corridor, and the crystal-clear, snow-capped silhouette of winter — each has its own charm.
For viewing Fuji, winter (November to February) brings the clearest, driest air and the most complete snow cap, though it is cold; spring (March–April) blossom and autumn (November) foliage set the mountain off most beautifully.
Climbing is only permitted during the official season from early July to early September; at other times summit facilities are closed and ascending is strictly forbidden, so plan accordingly.
Fuji is often veiled by cloud, and its full shape is more likely to appear at dawn and dusk. Allow two to three days and keep checking the weather and visibility forecasts to improve your chances of a clear view.
Climb within your ability: the altitude can cause acute mountain sickness, so split the ascent over two days and acclimatise in a mountain hut rather than pushing blindly to the top at night. Bring windproof, waterproof and warm clothing, a head torch, gloves and plenty of water.
In recent years the Yoshida trail (Yamanashi side) has introduced a climbing fee and controls on numbers and hours (such as a toll and restrictions on setting out from evening into the early morning); the exact amount and rules are subject to the latest official announcement, so check before you go.
Stay on the marked trails, do not cross safety lines and carry all your rubbish down. The summit and many component sites are places of worship, so respect the faith and behave courteously. Lakeside traffic is heavy in peak season — book buses and accommodation early.
