Tokyo was once called Edo, originally a fishing village at the mouth of the Sumida River. In 1457 the warrior Ota Dokan built Edo Castle here, laying the town's foundations. In 1603 Tokugawa Ieyasu established the Edo shogunate, and over the following two centuries Edo, as the de facto political centre, flourished into one of the most populous cities in the world.
After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the emperor moved from Kyoto to Edo, renamed Tokyo (meaning “eastern capital”), and Japan's political centre shifted east. The 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and the 1945 wartime air raids twice devastated the city, and Tokyo rose again from the ruins each time.
The 1964 Tokyo Olympics drove infrastructure such as the Shinkansen and metropolitan expressways, propelling Tokyo into a modern global metropolis; it hosted the postponed 2020 Games in 2021. Today Tokyo is a hub of the world economy, culture and fashion.
Tradition and the Imperial Palace: Senso-ji temple with its Kaminarimon gate and Nakamise shopping street symbolise old Tokyo; the forested Meiji Shrine is serene; the Imperial Palace East Gardens and Nijubashi bridge offer a distant view of the emperor's residence.
Urban skylines: the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and its crowds, Shinjuku's Kabukicho and the free observation deck of the Metropolitan Government Building, Tokyo Tower and Skytree for city views, and the bustle of Ginza and Marunouchi.
Trends and entertainment: Harajuku's Takeshita Street and the fashion of Omotesando, Akihabara's electronics and anime, Odaiba's waterfront and replica Statue of Liberty, Ueno Park's cluster of museums, and the food of Tsukiji Outer Market and Toyosu Market.
Nearby escapes: Disneyland (actually in Urayasu, Chiba), Kamakura and Enoshima, Hakone's hot springs and Nikko are all classic day trips.
Day 1 · Tradition and centre: Senso-ji and Nakamise → Skytree → Ueno Park and its museums → Ginza or Marunouchi at Tokyo Station in the evening.
Day 2 · Trends and night views: Meiji Shrine → Harajuku's Takeshita Street and Omotesando → the Shibuya Scramble Crossing → the Shinjuku observation deck or Kabukicho at night.
Day 3 · Bay or theme park: Odaiba's waterfront, Statue of Liberty and shopping; or a full day at Disneyland/DisneySea; or a day trip to Kamakura, Hakone and other nearby spots.
Spring (March–April) brings cherry blossom, with crowds at Ueno Park, the Meguro River and Shinjuku Gyoen — the most popular hanami season; autumn (November) offers equally lovely foliage and ginkgo (such as the avenue at Meiji Jingu Gaien).
Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with festivals like the Sumida River fireworks in July–August; winter (December–February) is dry, sunny and rarely snowy, good for indoor museums and shopping, and dazzling with year-end illuminations.
June and around September are the rainy and typhoon seasons — carry an umbrella and watch the weather. Tokyo is pleasant year-round, with spring and autumn the most comfortable.
Tokyo's rail network is superb but complex; buy an IC card (Suica/Pasmo) to tap on and off and use a transfer app. Trains are packed at peak (7–9am, 5–7pm), so try to travel off-peak.
Japanese society values order and quiet: do not talk loudly on the phone on trains, give up priority seats, carry your own rubbish (street bins are scarce), queue orderly, and stand on the left on escalators (Tokyo custom).
Popular sights, Michelin restaurants and Disney tickets need booking well ahead in peak season. Cash is still common, though most places accept cards and mobile payment. Earthquakes occur, so note your accommodation's evacuation instructions.
