The Grand Canyon lies in northwestern Arizona, cut over millions of years by the Colorado River through the plateau, and is one of the world's most famous natural wonders.
More than a kilometre deep and hundreds of kilometres long, its layered walls record the geological history of the earth, and it is called a living textbook of geology.
Grand Canyon National Park is inscribed as a World Heritage Site and is divided into the busy South Rim and the quieter North Rim.
The South Rim's many viewpoints unfold along the edge of the canyon; at sunrise and sunset the rock glows gold and red, a magnificent sight.
Look down from the rim trails into the deep gorge and the winding Colorado River; the glass platform of the Skywalk hangs over the canyon for a thrilling view.
The nearby Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon are classic geological wonders; a helicopter or a rafting trip shows the canyon from another angle.
Classic one day: the South Rim trail, a round of viewpoints, then the sunset at an outlook in the evening.
In depth: hike a section down into the canyon, the glass Skywalk, then a helicopter flight over the rim or rafting on the Colorado River.
Combined: the South Rim, Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, and Las Vegas.
From April to June and September to October the climate is mild and the skies clear, the best season to visit the Grand Canyon with excellent visibility.
Summer is hot with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy crowds, and in winter the South Rim is cold with occasional snow while the North Rim closes. Check the weather and opening conditions before you go.
Where the rim has no railing, stay well back from the edge and watch children; hiking down is strenuous and the climb back up is tiring, so go within your limits and carry plenty of water.
Day and night temperatures differ widely and the sun is strong, so protect against both sun and cold; lodging and campsites are tight in high season and best booked ahead. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
