Osaka, once called Naniwa, has long been a port at the mouth of the Yodo River and a hub of transport and trade since the Kofun period. In 1496 Rennyo of the Jodo Shinshu Hongan-ji built the Ishiyama Hongan-ji here, which for a time became a powerful temple town.
In 1583, after unifying the realm, Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Osaka Castle on the site, lifting Osaka into a political and economic centre; in the Edo period, as the “kitchen of the nation”, Osaka became the country's distribution and commercial hub thanks to its waterways, and its merchant culture flourished.
After the Meiji Restoration Osaka developed into a modern industrial city. It hosted the Japan World Exposition in 1970 and the Osaka-Kansai Expo again in 2025. Today Osaka is the core of Japan's second-largest metropolitan area, famed for its food, commerce and street energy.
Osaka Castle Park: the rebuilt keep of the famous castle raised by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, magnificent with cherry blossom, moats and stone walls in spring — a historic landmark.
Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi: the Glico “running man” neon sign, giant three-dimensional billboards and the canal night scene, linked to the Shinsaibashi-suji shopping arcade — the heart of Osaka's food and shopping, where the “eat till you drop” culture is on full display.
Universal Studios Japan (USJ): Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Minion Park and other themed areas, popular with families and young people.
More: Tsutenkaku tower and the kushikatsu streets of Shinsekai, Kuromon Market (“Osaka's kitchen”), the Tempozan Kaiyukan (a world-class aquarium), and the Umeda Sky Building observatory and Hankyu department store.
Day 1 · History and street life: Osaka Castle Park and the keep → eat at Kuromon Market → Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi → Tsutenkaku and Shinsekai kushikatsu in the evening.
Day 2 · Universal Studios: a full day at USJ (buy an Express Pass and enter right at opening to grab the popular rides).
Day 3 · Bay or nearby: the Tempozan Kaiyukan and Ferris wheel; or a day trip to Nara, Kyoto, Kobe, Arima Onsen and other Kansai spots.
Spring (March–April) brings cherry blossom at Osaka Castle and the Mint Bureau, and autumn (November) dresses the gardens in ginkgo and maples — the most comfortable seasons to visit.
Summer (July–August) is hot and humid, with the Tenjin Matsuri in late July, one of Japan's three great festivals, featuring a boat procession and fireworks; winter (December–February) is chilly but rarely snowy, lively with year-end illuminations.
June and around September are the rainy/typhoon seasons — carry an umbrella and watch transport; USJ queues are very long in peak season and on holidays, so weekdays are best.
Osaka's subway and private railways are dense; buy an IC card or an Osaka Amazing Pass (with free entry to many sights plus transport). USJ tickets and Express Passes must be booked early on the official site in peak season — beware of touts.
Eating while walking and littering are prohibited around Dotonbori; eat in the designated areas in front of shops and take your rubbish with you. Shinsaibashi and Kuromon Market are crowded, so mind your belongings and keep order.
Osakans are frank and most shops have clear prices, but some snack bars and izakaya charge a per-person “seat/ototoshi” fee, so confirm before paying; admission and opening hours of each sight are subject to the latest official announcement.
