Hokkaido is Japan's northernmost main island, once called Ezo and long the homeland of the Ainu people. After the Meiji Restoration the Japanese government set up a Development Commission here, introducing Western planning and farming techniques, and towns such as Sapporo were built on a grid of streets.
With its vast land and cool climate, Hokkaido grew into a heartland of Japanese farming, dairy and fisheries, famed for dairy products, seafood, potatoes and lavender fields. Today it draws travellers from around the world with natural scenery across four distinct seasons and its cuisine.
The rolling flower fields of Furano and Biei are the signature of summer, with waves of purple when the lavender at Farm Tomita is in full bloom; the Biei Blue Pond glows in eerie blue amid standing dead trees, almost dreamlike.
Along the Otaru Canal stand rows of red-brick warehouses, and in winter the Snow Light Path glimmers with candles on the snow; glass crafts and sweet shops add a romantic, nostalgic air.
Hakodate's million-dollar night view is hailed as one of the three great night views in the world, with the Kanemori warehouses and the exotic buildings of Motomachi telling tales of the old port; Sapporo has the Shiroi Koibito park, Odori Park and the winter Snow Festival ice sculptures, while Asahiyama Zoo is famous for ecological displays such as the penguin walk.
Flower route (summer): Sapporo → the lavender fields of Furano → the Biei Blue Pond and the Patchwork Road → Asahikawa.
Snow light route (winter): the Sapporo Snow Festival → the Otaru Canal Snow Light Path → Noboribetsu Onsen or Lake Toya → the night view of Hakodate.
Foodie loop: sushi in Otaru → a seafood bowl at Hakodate Morning Market → Sapporo ramen and Genghis Khan grilled lamb → sweets at the Shiroi Koibito park.
Summer (June to August) is cool and pleasant, the best season for flowers and the outdoors; winter (December to February) is wrapped in snow, with the Snow Festival, hot springs and skiing holding their own charm.
Spring cherry blossom comes later and autumn foliage is brief, each with its own scenery; winter roads are snowy and icy, so bring anti-slip gear and watch traffic. Check the weather before you go.
Hokkaido is vast with long drives between cities; plan rail, car rental or bus travel and allow plenty of time.
Winters are bitterly cold, so dress warmly and take care against slipping; some facilities such as hot springs and the zoo limit opening hours for certain exhibits. Tickets and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
