Bangkok sits on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River and began as a riverside fishing village and small trading port. After the ancient capital of Ayutthaya fell to Burmese forces in 1767, King Taksin established a short-lived capital at Thonburi on the west bank.
In 1782 King Rama I, founder of the Chakri dynasty, moved the capital to Bangkok on the east bank and built the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, establishing the city as the seat of Siam. Through nine reigns, Bangkok grew from a city of canals into a modern metropolis.
The city's full ceremonial Thai name is extraordinarily long and means ‘City of Angels’; since the twentieth century Bangkok has become a major economic, transport and cultural hub of Southeast Asia, blending ancient temples with soaring skyscrapers.
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew: the royal palace complex of the Chakri dynasty, with dazzling Thai palace and temple architecture, home to the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most revered image.
Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn): a landmark Khmer-style prang on the west bank of the Chao Phraya, its central tower rising about 70 metres, especially striking in silhouette at dusk.
Wat Pho: one of Bangkok's oldest temples, famed for its huge reclining golden Buddha and long galleries of images, and the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.
Floating markets and riverside night bazaars: Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa reveal traditional life on the water, while the Ferris wheel of the riverside night market overlooks the Chao Phraya at night.
Modern shopping districts: the Siam area is dense with shopping malls and Sukhumvit Road offers lively nightlife — a paradise of shopping and food.
Classic day: the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew in the morning → walk to Wat Pho → cross the river by boat to Wat Arun → evening at a riverside night market or Khao San Road.
Cultural deep dive: climb the Golden Mount (Wat Saket) for old-town views → the National Museum → Chinatown (Yaowarat Road) for street food and seafood.
Shopping and leisure: the malls of the Siam district → hunt for handicrafts at Chatuchak Weekend Market → an evening massage → a night cruise on the Chao Phraya.
The cool season (November to February) is dry and comfortable — the golden period for visiting Bangkok and the peak tourist season.
The hot season (March to May) is sweltering; Songkran, the water festival in mid-April, is the country's biggest celebration, with joy across the city.
The rainy season (June to October) brings brief afternoon showers that come and go quickly — carry an umbrella; malls and indoor sights are pleasant year-round.
Dress modestly for the Grand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew and other religious sites: no shorts, short skirts or sleeveless tops; remove shoes before entering halls, and do not climb on Buddha images or pose with your back to them.
Thailand reveres its monarchy — show respect and stand during the national anthem when it is played in public.
Traffic is heavy; use the skytrain, metro and Chao Phraya express boats, and insist on the meter in taxis.
Beware of tourist scams and overcharging: strangers claiming a sight is ‘closed today’ to redirect you are usually touts; agree on a price before taking a tuk-tuk or shopping. Admission and opening hours are subject to the latest official announcement.
